How to make money from TikTok
Creators can earn through TikTok in several ways: platform rewards, LIVE tips, paywalled Series, monthly Subscriptions where offered, brand deals, Shop commissions and sales of their own or external products—paid by TikTok, viewers, brands, sellers or outside customers. This guide is for a general audience—not only adult creators—and maps those routes as of September 14, 2026.
Eligibility, payout rules and feature availability are market-specific. Published Support, Academy and program-terms pages name the markets and thresholds they cover; check what your account actually offers before you plan income around a feature.
Compare the main earning routes
| Route | Who pays | Main entry bar (published) | What you do | Principal cost or limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creator Rewards | TikTok (variable rewards) | Named markets; Personal Account; age and activity thresholds (Academy; regional terms) | Post original videos of at least one minute that earn qualified views | Join ≠ every video pays; RPM is not a fixed rate; sponsored videos do not qualify |
| LIVE Gifts | Viewers (Coins → Gifts → Diamonds) | Live where Gifts exist; age; eligible to go LIVE; good standing (Support) | Host LIVE and keep viewers engaged | Schedule and moderation time; Gift availability is regional |
| Series | Viewers buying access | Select-region join rules dated June 6, 2023 (Newsroom); confirm on-account access | Package and sell Collections of videos | Content must pass review; price locked after publish; payout threshold |
| Subscriptions | Subscribers (monthly fee) | Select regions; age; followers/views or LIVE eligibility (Newsroom) | Deliver member perks and exclusive posts/LIVEs | Recurring offer only where the feature is available on your account |
| Sponsorships | Brands / clients | Audience fit + disclosure for third-party deals (Support) | Negotiate and deliver disclosed brand posts or LIVEs | Disclosure does not legalize a prohibited offer; deal pipeline is uneven |
| TikTok Shop affiliate | Sellers (commission on qualifying sales) | Market-specific Shop creator rules (US example below) | Make shoppable videos/LIVEs that convert | Commission only on completed qualifying orders; product access can be limited |
| Your own products | Buyers | Shop seller eligibility or permitted off-app checkout | Create, fulfill and support the product | Inventory or print-on-demand cost; digital listings follow each market’s product policy |
| External products / services | Buyers off TikTok | Offer must be allowed to promote and link under Guidelines | Grow interest on TikTok, close sales elsewhere | Destination and promotion rules are separate from “the video looks clean” |
Account strikes under the Community Guidelines can cut Rewards, LIVE, Series, Subscriptions, Shop tools and brand interest together. Consistency and watchable video still matter for every route that depends on views or LIVE attendance.
Creator Rewards: join the program vs get paid on a video
Treat these as two different gates.
Who can join (Academy — named markets)
Creator Academy states the program is open to creators based in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil, with an account registered there. Documented join criteria on Academy include:
- Age 18+ on the Academy overview
- Personal Account only (Business Accounts and accounts tied to political or government organizations do not qualify)
- Account in good standing under the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service
- At least 10,000 followers
- At least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days
- No tampering, fraud or Guidelines violations
Regional program terms can tighten age (and other) rules. The Japan / South Korea Creator Rewards Program Terms require the age of majority in the creator’s place of residence—for example 19 in South Korea and 18 in Japan—so do not treat Academy’s blanket 18+ line as sufficient for every market in that list.
Apply from Profile → Menu → TikTok Studio → Creator Rewards Program. Academy says you should hear back within about three days. If that path is missing, the feature is not available on your account yet.
When an individual video can collect rewards
After approval, Support’s How rewards work page says eligible videos start to collect rewards once they reach 1,000 qualified For You feed views. That threshold opens collection; it is separate from how rewards are calculated afterward. Only eligible videos posted after you are approved can collect.
Program terms describe eligible videos as at least one minute / one minute or longer (EEA terms; Japan / South Korea terms). Academy overview copy sometimes says “over one minute”; this guide follows the terms wording. Academy’s other video criteria still include:
- Original content
- Not a Duet or Stitch
- Not created with Photo Mode
- Not an ad, paid promotion or sponsored post
- Compliant with program terms, Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, Creator Code of Conduct and copyright rules
What “qualified views” means
Keep the 1,000 qualified For You views start gate above separate from the definition of a qualified view and from later RPM math.
Creator Academy’s qualified-view article states that a view only counts as qualified if it comes from a country where Creator Rewards is available—listing the United States, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and France. That is a viewer-location rule for which views qualify. It is separate from the creator join rule that you must be based in a program market.
That Academy article also counts:
- Watch time of at least five seconds
- Search views with watch times of at least 30 seconds
- One unique view per account
- Exclusions for fraud, paid views and disliked views
- Ads, paid promotions and sponsored content do not qualify for rewards
Support’s How rewards work page defines qualified views as unique For You feed views under the program terms for those same markets, and excludes fraudulent, paid, disliked, under-five-second, promoted and artificial views. It does not restate Academy’s viewer-country sentence or the Search ≥30-seconds rule in the same place. Where Academy and Support differ, treat each as written rather than merging them into one rule.
After collection starts, rewards use a variable RPM (average rewards per 1,000 qualified views). Support lists factors such as watch time and finish rates, search value, location, engagement and advertising value. There is no fixed public payout rate. Support also describes Standard Reward and Additional Reward components; Additional Reward is tied to quality criteria, not a second guaranteed paycheck.
Confirm payment timing and thresholds in the program terms linked for your market.
LIVE Gifts
LIVE Gifts lets viewers send virtual Gifts during a LIVE. TikTok awards Diamonds based on Gift popularity under its virtual-item rules; those Diamonds can lead to rewards when payout requirements are met.
To turn on LIVE Gifts, Support requires that you:
- Live in a location where LIVE Gifts is available
- Be 18+ (or 19 in South Korea)
- Be eligible to go LIVE
- Keep an account in good standing under the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service
Government, Politician and Political Party Accounts, and other public-interest accounts called out on that page, are not eligible to collect Diamonds through LIVE Gifts.
On the LIVE screen, Support’s path is Settings → LIVE Gifts on or off. Going LIVE has its own regional rules (age confirmation, follower thresholds where applicable)—check Support’s LIVE hosting articles and what your account shows. Gifts are a viewer-funded tip stream, not Creator Rewards.
Series (paywalled Collections on TikTok)
Series is on-platform paid video: viewers buy access to a Collection. Support’s create and manage guide covers how to build a Series once you have access (up to 80 videos, each 30 seconds to 20 minutes, Community Guidelines review before publish). Entry points Support documents include Profile → Menu → TikTok Studio → Series, the Series link on your profile, and tiktok.com/series on the web. Support’s payments page lets you set a price from $0.99 to $189.99; price cannot change after posting. If accumulated Series payment reaches $50 (or local equivalent), TikTok sends payment on the 15th of the month after you complete PayPal, tax and identity steps.
Eligibility (dated Newsroom language)
Current Support create and payments articles explain packaging and payouts; they do not republish a full join checklist in the pages reviewed for this update. Until Support republishes current thresholds, use the June 6, 2023 Newsroom update as dated language only: in select regions, creators who are 18+, have an account at least 30 days old with at least 10,000 followers, have posted more than three public videos in the last 30 days, and have at least 1,000 authentic video views in the last 30 days are described as eligible to join. Creators under 10,000 followers who otherwise meet those requirements can apply by providing a link to premium content previously sold on other platforms. Application does not guarantee access. Confirm whether Series appears for your account through the Studio or profile paths above.
Series is a one-time access purchase for a Collection. It is not the same product as monthly Subscriptions (below).
Subscriptions (brief)
TikTok also offers Subscriptions in select regions: a monthly fee for member perks such as exclusive videos, LIVEs, notes, badges and community spaces (Newsroom, September 23, 2024).
Published access language there: 18+, account in good standing, and either at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the past calendar month, or specific LIVE eligibility requirements. That Newsroom post also points creators to the Monetization module in TikTok Studio for an overview of offerings where available.
So recurring membership is not something that only exists off-platform. Availability still depends on region and account. Off-platform subscriptions remain a separate choice when you need tools, pricing or content TikTok will not host.
Sponsorships and content disclosure
Sponsorship income is a negotiated payment (or other incentive) from a third-party brand or client for promoting their product or service. That is separate from promoting your own business, which may still be commercial content but is not itself sponsorship revenue.
TikTok’s Support article Promoting a brand, product, or service requires the content disclosure setting for both kinds of commercial posts and LIVEs:
- Promoting your own brand or business → labeled Promotional content
- Branded content for another business (payment or other incentive) → labeled Paid partnership
You can set disclosure before or after posting and when you go LIVE. Once published, Support says the label cannot be changed; fix a mistake by removing the post or LIVE and creating a new one with the correct selection.
Commercial posts must still meet TikTok’s Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, Branded Content Policy (when applicable) and applicable law. Turning on disclosure does not make an otherwise prohibited promotion allowed—it only marks commercial intent.
Sponsored or paid promotional videos also do not qualify for Creator Rewards under Academy’s video rules, so treat Rewards and brand posts as separate plans for the same calendar.
TikTok Shop affiliate, your products and external offers
Affiliate commissions (market-specific)
Affiliate creators promote sellers’ TikTok Shop listings and earn commission on qualifying sales. Rules differ by country.
United States example (TikTok Shop Seller University Creator Eligibility Policy, labeled as applying to creators based in the United States): Affiliate Creators who self-apply need at least 1,000 followers, must be 18+, based in the United States, pass identity/age checks as required, and comply with Shop and Community policies. Creators under 5,000 followers can face pilot limits on product access and posting volume. Apply through TikTok Shop creator tools / Seller University paths for your market—do not assume Shop appears under the same Studio menu as Creator Rewards. Do not treat those US thresholds as global defaults.
Selling your own products
You can sell through TikTok Shop where seller tools are offered, or fulfill orders yourself. Print-on-demand lowers inventory risk but usually raises unit cost; bulk inventory is cheaper per unit if it sells and expensive if it does not.
Digital goods and Shop
Do not assume ebooks, courses, downloads or other digital goods are eligible for TikTok Shop in your market. Check that market’s prohibited / restricted / virtual-goods product policy before planning a Shop listing. Many digital offers still belong on an external checkout that you are allowed to promote.
Permitted external products or services
Coaching, downloads, memberships and other offers sold off TikTok are a separate model: TikTok supplies discovery; another site takes payment. That only works when both the promotion and the destination are allowed under TikTok’s rules (see the next section for adult destinations).
Adult-promotion rules
Under Sensitive and mature themes → Body Exposure and Sexualized Behaviors, TikTok’s not-allowed list includes facilitating access to sexual services, such as offering or asking for sexual acts, sexual chats or imagery, or pornography. Separately, Regulated goods, services, and commercial activities disallows trading, marketing or providing access to sexual services, including solicitation or sexcamming.
A non-sexual paid offer hosted on OnlyFans (for example coaching or workout plans) is not the same thing as an adult destination. Neither a clean, Guidelines-compliant video nor a link hub by itself establishes permission to promote or link a restricted destination.
For the four separate checks and practical examples, use TikTok and OnlyFans.
Hypothetical one-month example
Hypothetical: In one calendar month, a US Affiliate Creator records 28 completed TikTok Shop affiliate orders. Each order’s item price is $32, and every qualifying order pays a fixed 12% commission. The example assumes no later cancellations, refunds or commission adjustments.
- Gross commission: 28 × $32 × 0.12 = $107.52
- Listed sample expense that month: $40 for products bought to film demos
- Amount remaining after that $40 expense, before tax and any other costs: $67.52
This is teaching arithmetic for one month’s completed orders only. It does not predict your results, and it does not assume those buyers reorder or become a recurring revenue base.
Next step
- Check each route’s own entry point for what your account shows: TikTok Studio → Creator Rewards Program; LIVE Settings → LIVE Gifts; TikTok Studio → Series or tiktok.com/series; Studio Monetization where Subscriptions or other programs appear; TikTok Shop creator tools for affiliate or seller access.
- Match what you see to the published requirements above for your market.
- For a first test, pick one route you already qualify for (or are closest to) and run it for 30 days—for example Rewards-eligible longer videos, one LIVE schedule, or a small affiliate product set. You do not need a backup route to start.
- Track the metric that route actually pays on (qualified views, Diamonds, Series purchases, disclosed brand fees, affiliate orders or external sales).
- If the offer is adult or OnlyFans-related, finish the rules check in TikTok and OnlyFans before you scale promotion.
